What if we could harness the ability of animals to forecast natural disasters? In a future Edinburgh that has been partly devastated by rising seawater, Drover is analysing a colony of bats to understand how they predict weather crises. Drover’s motivated to help people, but what happens when the data fall into the wrong hands, and are used for financial profit?
My short story ‘The Way Out’ was inspired by real-life work on tracking animals using satellite technology. It was commissioned by the Center for Science and the Imagination at Arizona State University, and is available and free to read at Future Tense Fiction.
